Mission in Malawi May /June 2007
Dr. Sue Makin, OB-GYN
specialist and PC(USA) missionary, has been partially supported by First
Pres since she initially went to the mission field in Congo in
1989.
For many years she has been at Mulanje Presbyterian Mission Hospital in
southern Malawi. We ask her each year how we can help her ministry and
contribute toward her suggestion.
Marion Medical Mission,
created by Tom and Jocelyn Logan in Marion, Ill,
15
years ago, is most famous for its’ shallow well program-970+
wells were placed last year in remote villages in Malawi, Tanzania, and
Zambia. The wells provide clean drinking water for these villagers who would
otherwise have none. MMM also helps many schools, churches and hospitals. See their website for
more about this exciting ministry.
Medical Benevolence
Foundation, a ”validated mission group” of the PC(USA), is the major
contributor to the Church’s medical ministry around the world. MBF raises
funds to meet requests from the missions themselves. It also spreads the
good news of this program of the Church, coordinates volunteers and the need
for them overseas and collects and provides to mission hospitals and clinics
supplies and equipment through Project Cure.
Since
2003,
a major overseas mission interest of First Pres has been Embangweni and
Kalikumbi, Malawi. Each year for now
5
years a group of
9
to
12 individuals have made a
3-4
week visit to Malawi. The group has included people from First and
Westminster in Lynchburg, Amherst Pres, Covenant in Roanoke, and others. The
multitalented group has taught in the
3
schools, given morning devotions, painted dorms, repaired almost anything
and made new friends while renewing old ones. With funds from a major
campaign in
2003 and First Pres budget plus help from the above churches and more,
dormitories at Embangweni’s secondary school have been renovated, a computer
lab was finished and several buildings were wired, etc. At Kalikumbi
Village, about
20 kilometers away, a new manse was built and several school buildings and
teachers’ houses were renovated. With funds from several USA churches the
village is now having electricity installed. A new larger church is now
being built by the village.
