 INTRODUCTION

AN INVITATION

The Book of Order informs us that “an important and continuing context for Christian Nurture is the home, where faith is shared through worship, teaching, and example.  The church provides other occasions for nurture:

 a)         in the classes of the church school,

 b)         in other groups and fellowships organized for education and nurture,

 c)         in groups and associations gathered for service and mission,

 d)         in committees, boards, and governing bodies,

 e)         in retreats, camps, and conferences.

The confessional documents of the church provide guidance in nurture.  Education materials developed for various approaches to Christian nurture are appropriate for use as approved by the session.”  (W-6.2006)

With gratitude for our leaders, teachers, and many other volunteers, you are enthusiastically invited to participate in any of the programs described in this booklet.  Don’t hesitate to contact the church office with your questions.

 See you at church!

 SUNDAY NURSERY CARE

Nursery care is provided for children who are infants and toddlers during Sunday School and all worship services.   Our nursery care providers are always concerned for the security and nurture of every child placed under their care.  Parents of children in the nursery are asked to share their time in providing care several Sundays per year.  The Christian Education Committee reviews the policies and concerns pertaining to the nursery.

 [Coordinator: Claudia Pierpoint [384-8188]

WORSHIP WORKSHOP

Worship Workshop is an extended worship session offered to children four and above who are excused from the 11:00 A.M. worship service (10:00 A.M. summer) just after the children’s message. Adult volunteers help coordinators for 30 minutes using prepared lesson materials that are provided.  Craft activities are frequently employed.

Parents of children who participate in Worship Workshop are asked to share their    time in providing care several Sundays per year.

 [Coordinator: Claudia Pierpoint [384-8188]

ADULT SUNDAY SCHOOL CLASSES

THE CHRISTIAN EXPLORATIONS CLASS – Parlor (Room 114)

World religions, marriage, what Presbyterians believe, parenting, history of the Bible, pop culture, televangelism, terrorism. . . If any of these topics interest you, then this is the class for you!  Join us as we explore these and other issues through the lenses of our faith.   Our interaction, discussion, and sharing together takes on issues in units of one to six weeks. Participants or groups of participants will present topics of particular interest to them.  Join us and make sure that issues of concern to you are among those under consideration.  Our class is always lively and a stimulant to the growth of faith.  Newcomers and visitors are always welcome.

[Leaders:  Emmett Lifsey, Chal Nunn]

THE FAMILY MATTERS CLASS – Officers’ Room (Room 117)

Our class welcomes adults of all ages and family circumstances to join our Sunday School family.  We address “family matters” such as Christian parenting, marriage and relationships, but also challenge ourselves to look for God’s guidance, as evidenced in the Bible, in all facets of our lives.

We have divided this year into two sections.  During the first several months of the Sunday School calendar we will examine our individual and very personal relationships with God.  A combination of class discussion, book study and video presentations will be utilized as we delve into topics such as Spirituality, Sabbath-keeping, Advent Preparation and Prayer.

The second phase of the year expands our focus from our solitary relationship with our Creator to creating Godly relationships within our homes.  From communication and “fighting-fair” to sexuality, domestic cooperation and budgeting, a Christian marriage is to be modeled on Biblical principles and rely greatly on repentance, forgiveness and unified vision.  With invited expert speakers, testimonies from couples who have succeeded in making marriage a truly Holy and Blessed Union and lots of frank conversation, we anticipate this will serve as an enriching experience for many in the class.  Lastly, we plan to study the Apostle Paul from an historic perspective, touching on his teachings regarding marriage and relationships.  (Continued on next page)

Adult Sunday School Classes

As in past years, the interests of the participants guide the topics of discussion, and tangents are the rule!  We welcome everyone back to the class this year and hope to see many new faces as well.  We especially encourage new members and regular visitors to join us each Sunday at 10:00 A.M. in the “Officers’ Room” (Room 117).

WELCOME TO THE FAMILY!!!

[Taught by Andrea Kittrell and Matt Foster]

THE MANSON-STEWART BIBLE CLASS – Chapel

This Bible study class invites people of all ages to come and enjoy a morning of fellowship, reflection, and challenging Bible learning.  Bring your Bible and join in weekly presentations that are meant to stimulate our faith.  Newcomers are always welcome!  This year continues with the study of 2 Corinthians.

[Taught by Dick Boswell, Coordinator:  Herb Bennett]

THE MARTIN-GIFFORD CLASS – Room 119

The Martin-Gifford Class will begin the fall with the study of Paul’s Letter to the Romans.  There is time each week for questions and discussion; but no one is required to speak.  The class consists of both men and women of all ages, both couples and singles, and new members are always welcome.  Join us in Room 119 any Sunday or all Sundays at 10:00 A.M.

[Taught by Madaline Martin]

PASTOR’S CLASS – Fellowship Hall

This Bible study class follows the weekly International Sunday School Lesson (Uniform Series) which strives to acquaint students with texts from both the Old and New Testaments.  Anyone is invited to join the class as we look at the designated text for each Sunday and struggle to find its application for our lives.  Topics to be studied during the 2006-2007 year include: God's Covenant (Genesis-2 Chronicles), Christ, the Image of God (Colossians, Hebrews, 1 John, John, Philippians), Christ and His Followers in the Gospel of John, the First Epistle of John, and Revelation.

[Taught by John Scholer]

 CONFIRMATION

Confirmation is an important step in the Christian maturity of the 8th graders at First Presbyterian Church.   It culminates with members of the class affirming the questions of church membership during the morning worship service.  The confirmation course varies from year to year, but elements typically include opportunities for fellowship, learning, service, worship, and retreat fun.

YOUTH MINISTRY

The Middle School and Senior High youth gather on Sunday evenings during the school year, as well as for special events and outings during the summer.  Dinner is usually served for $3.00.  Committed parents and volunteers at First Presbyterian share the vision of a youth program that will nurture, educate, and equip our youth to accept life’s challenges with confidence and faith.

Varieties of activities are possible.  From putt-putt to bowling to skiing to summer mission work to camps and conferences, fellowship opportunities abound for all youth.  Interest is high for getting involved in mission and outreach at both the local and global level.  It may be working on a home renovation project, or raking leaves, or caroling in a local retirement home.  FPC youth are excited about their chance to help and encourage others.

The Apostle Paul’s admonition to his ministry cohort Timothy is an instructive and guiding principle:  “Don’t let anyone put you down because you’re young.  Teach believers with your life: by word, by demeanor, by love, by faith, by integrity.”  (1 Tim. 4:12)

              =======================================

THE WEEKDAY SCHOOL

The Weekday School of First Presbyterian Church was founded in 1946 and continues to be an integral part of the church’s ministry. The purpose of this early childhood ministry is to provide to our church members and community the highest quality preschool and extended care experience possible for children ages twelve months – five years. Along with a dedicated teaching staff, we are also fortunate to be able to offer assistance to children with special needs through the Lynchburg City Schools resource teachers.

The Weekday School is operated as a part of the church’s educational program under the supervision of a Weekday School Board which reports through the Christian Education Committee of the church’s Session directly to church governing boards.  The Marge Dillard Scholarship Fund provides tuition assistance for families who qualify for yearly tuition aid. An endowment fund has been established so that interested persons can contribute towards the long-term educational ministry of the school.  The Elise Mason Playground Fund enables the Weekday School to maintain a quality playground facility for all of our children.

Our hours of operation are from 9:00 A.M. to 12:00 noon, five days a week from September through May. “Lunch Bunch” is an extended classroom session into the afternoon for children aged 3, 4, and 5.  It lasts until 2:00 P.M. or 5:15 P.M. For additional information about the Weekday School, contact Mrs. Marie Daughtrey (384-0652).

 OPORTUNITIES FOR BIBLE STUDIES

 THURSDAY STUDY GROUP

The Study Group, which meets every Thursday, will have its first meeting on Thursday, September 14, at 9:30 A.M. in Room 114.  The class ends by 10:45 A.M.

We will begin the year studying Not the Way It’s Supposed To Be by Cornelius Plantinga, Jr.  Dr. Plantinga will be the guest preacher for the Offterdinger-Williamson preaching series at FPC in October.  Books are ordered for students through the class.

Join us for lively discussions, quiet contemplation, fellowship and friendship.  Call Susan Arthur at 586-0862 with any questions.

MEN’S FRIDAY MORNING SMALL GROUP BIBLE STUDY

A small group gathers for Bible study on Fridays from  6:30 until 7:30 A.M. in the church library.  This is our fifth year.  Men take turns researching topics, preparing lessons, and leading the weekly studies.  We are currently using “The Mighty Acts of God” by A.B. Rhodes (Rev. ed. 2000) to guide Bible reading and study.

Small groups provide the deeper exploration of scripture and for exchange of ideas and discoveries in our quest for discipleship, faith, and spiritual growth.  Please come by if you are interested.

THE CHOIRS

There is a place for you in the Choir! First Presbyterian Church offers several choirs through which you may serve. A total Graded Choir System is designed to utilize and develop the abilities of all who will use their musical talent for the glory of God. Singing is for the entire at family at FPC! A carefully planned and well-rounded music program is offered at each age level. Everyone is capable. Regardless of former experience, you and every member of your family can serve. The only requirements are dependability, a love of God and a sincere desire to serve Him.

THE CHANCEL CHOIR (Adult, College and High School Singers)

The Chancel Choir continues to be the leader of the great singing musical heritage that is First Presbyterian Church. The choir leads in worship every Sunday during the year at the 11:00 worship hour and is a major part of this church’s mission outreach. Thursday evening rehearsals from 7:15-9:15 begin in late August and continue through May. The Chancel Choir sings choral literature from Chant to 20th century masterpieces, contemporary anthems and spirituals. Concerts with orchestra planned for this season are the Mozart Solemn Vespers at Christmas and Requiem and Psalm 150 by Anton Bruckner in the spring. The Choir’s Concert Tour of Scandinavia and Russia this past summer was very successful. Future tours are in the planning stages.

THE CHANCEL RINGERS (Adult women and men)

Rehearsals are on Sunday evenings at 7:00 P.M. beginning on September 10. The ringers play approximately once a month for both Sunday morning services and at other special services and events.  Substitute ringers are always needed, and music-reading skills are required for this ensemble.

OTHER WAYS TO SERVE IN THE MINISTRY OF MUSIC

Adult instrumentalists and vocalists are always welcome to lead in worship. Children and Youth who play musical instruments can also plan to participate in the Youth Musicale Recital held each spring. Volunteers are always welcome to help with children’s choirs. Contact the Betenbaughs for details.

FRIENDS OF MUSIC

The ever-supportive congregation and Greater Choir of First Presbyterian Church.

The Ministry of Music in our church has a three-fold function:

1)     To provide the most effective music possible for the worship services,

2)     To be a means of religious and musical education for each person,

3)     To be a Christian witness to mankind

MUSIC FOR CHILDREN

 THE CHILDREN’S CHOIR (1st through 5th grade)

Choir for this age group is a time of fun and learning about the joy of music. We discover the church year, learn worship responses, play rhythm instruments, musical games and prepare age appropriate music for worship to be presented every four to six weeks. Basic music reading is introduced as well as Choirchimes to accompany seasonal anthems and songs. Hymns of our Presbyterian heritage are sung.

The older children are the leaders in casting for the annual musical.  The production for spring of 2007 will be Moses and the Freedom Fanatics.  These choristers also lead in the family Christmas Eve service. Choir time is on Wednesdays from 4:30-5:30 P.M. beginning on Sept. 6 with a Parent Meeting for sign-up for snacks and duty as a choir parent.

Special rehearsals and activities may be called occasionally. Parents will be notified with handouts sent home with children or via e-mail.

MUSIC FOR YOUTH

THE YOUTH CHOIR (Grades 6 through 12)

Singing, lay reading, anthem texts and their relationship to worship are the focus of this group of young people who lead in worship approximately once per month. The Youth Choir meets each Sunday at 5:30 P.M. in the choir room, beginning on September 10. The choristers are scheduled to travel to Philadelphia for their 5th Choir Tour over the Christmas holidays giving several mini-concerts at historic locations.

 YOUTH HANDBELL CHOIR

This time of fellowship and musical fun is at 5:00 P.M. on Sunday nights beginning on September 10 in the Bell Room. These ringers lead in worship as often as they have music prepared at either the early or late service.

 PRIVATE INSTRUCTION

Private instruction for instrumentalists, vocal soloists or small ensembles may be scheduled for 4:30 P.M. to 5:00 P.M. on Sunday evenings. This would include a combined instrumental ensemble scheduled to perform during Advent.

Special rehearsals and activities may be called occasionally. Notification will be made by e-mail.

… and a little child shall lead them.

Isaiah 10:6

OUR CHURCH AND COMMUNITY

Mission is a central word in the life of First Presbyterian Church.  Christ has called each of us to be disciples. There are many ways to become involved in our mission life.  Our efforts cannot be fully accomplished without the loving hands and hearts of those who get involved personally. Our Session, which governs the church, has established two committees, which lead us into mission, and they seek your help, input, and ideas.

The National and World Mission Group keeps us connected to efforts beyond our community that are spreading the Word of God, helping those in need, and responding to crises wherever they may arise. Our church reaches out in missions across North America and around the globe, including Africa (Malawi), India, Eastern Europe, South America, West Indies and Caribbean regions. We support church worship and Bible instruction, higher education for minority groups and seminarians, medical care and technical training, elementary and secondary school facilities and teaching materials, care of orphaned children and refugees, and installing wells for clean water in remote villages. For several years our volunteer teams have done hands-on work and trained local Malawi youth, teachers, and other adults so that they can continue much-needed renovation of school buildings and construction of church facilities, using our funds for purchase of vital construction materials.   We have had several teams go to the aid of the Katrina disaster victims, involving both youth and adults.

We concentrate our efforts in localities where Presbyterian Church representatives are at work on site, helping assure successful completion of these self-help projects.  Disaster recovery assistance is also provided as needs arise.

The Community Mission Group has a long history of reaching out to others locally.  It coordinates volunteer efforts and provides financial support to at least a twenty-five community ministries.

Ministries served include senior adult services, housing programs, youth community programs, homeless and employment skills programs, medical and prescription drug programs and hunger relief programs.  Other programs are considered as needs arise.

The Group has many volunteer opportunities throughout the year, both short term and long term in nature.  These include hands-on work helping to build homes for Habitat for Humanity, teaching or tutoring children through the Timothy program at Churches for Urban Ministries, providing traffic control for the 5K race at Presbyterian Homes & Family Services and collecting donations of food for the Rivermont Area Food Pantry.

We encourage all church members to find a role to play to help make a difference in our community.  You will be helping others and helping yourself as well.
